Truth, Justice & the American Way

Nice to see that *someone’s* not totally cowed.

  1. Brian Spence Says:

I just got the new Pearl Jam album, and it’s great, too. Check out these lyrics from “World Wide Suicide”(great song too, btw):

Medals on a wooden mantle. Next to a handsome face.
That the president took for granted.
    Writing checks that others pay.

It’s the same everyday and the wave won’t break
Tell you to pray, while the devils on their shoulder

It’s a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when a war has taken over

  2. Lien Says:

Not cowed? Like you are by all the idiots who think we shouldn’t be at war?

    MG, you people are fools!

  3. Forrest Says:

What! Congress declared war? On what country?

This is what I get for missing staff meetings.

  4. Brian Spence Says:

    MG? What’s that?

I think it’s pretty interesting that Steve has so many people who viciously disagree with him, yet they continue to check out his blog. What are you looking for, a valentine from Steve to Bush?

  5. Jim Brocius Says:

Semantics aside I don’t think you’ll find a single soldier serving over there who thinks it’s not a war. It’s the war on drugs that isn’t a war.

  6. Micah Says:

    “No one has the answer,
    But one thing is true,
You’ve got to turn on evil,
    When it’s coming after you,
    You’ve gotta face it down,
And when it tries to hide,
You’ve gota go in after it,
    And never be denied,
    Time is runnin’ out,
    Let’s roll.”

That’s Neil Young’s call to go to war from 5 years ago. Now he’s against the same war? He flip flops like a politician.

  7. Forrest Says:

Combat, yes, war, no. There is a difference.

“Measures that may be needed to defeat terrorism are themselves acts of terror when there is no war.” — Jerry Pournelle (slightly to the right of Genghis Khan)

  8. Forrest Says:

“Now he’s against the same war?”

I guess he noticed they weren’t fighting the war he wrote about.

  9. J. Alexander Says:

    Weapons of mass distraction, indeed.

  10. Lien Says:

Forrest, don’t be stupid. You know what that word means. And just because Jerry Pournelle says something doesn’t make it so.

Brian Spence, MG=My God. Before there were blogs, I didn’t know so many of the artists that create comics were blind to reality. I don’t expect anything from Steve, but commenting is allowed. I take that as an invitation to call someone an idiot when they espouse idiotic ideas.

  11. A.L. Baroza Says:

Funny that the right wingers now control all of the branches of government and most of the corporate world and media but they’re still so fucking angry.

    Makes me laugh.

  12. Steve Gerber Says:

Lien: “I don’t expect anything from Steve, but commenting is allowed. I take that as an invitation to call someone an idiot when they espouse idiotic ideas.”

Sorry. Only *I* get to do that on this blog. The only person *you’re* entitled to call an idiot in your commentary is me. (Well, me and any other public figure — but not your fellow readers.)

No name-calling, no flaming in the Comments section.

Anyone who cannot abide by that simple principle of civility will immediately be barred from posting without notice or negotiation.

    Clear?

  13. Steve Gerber Says:

Micah: “That’s Neil Young’s call to go to war from 5 years ago. Now he’s against the same war? He flip flops like a politician.”

Or maybe, like me, he only believes in attacking the actual enemy?

I wholeheartedly supported the decision to invade Afghanistan. I still believe it was the right thing to do.

Iraq never attacked us. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. It’s not the same war. It never was.

  14. Micah Says:

“Iraq never attacked us. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. It’s not the same war. It never was.”

Hmmm. That’s a good point. I have to say you’re right.

Although I don’t hear Young saying “let’s attack the actual enemy” anymore. Afghanistan is not the only country responsible for 9/11. I just wonder if Neil still feels “You’ve gotta go in after it, and never be denied,” now that it’s no longer en vogue to be calling for war.

  15. Steve Gerber Says:

Micah: “I don’t hear Young saying “let’s attack the actual enemy” anymore. Afghanistan is not the only country responsible for 9/11. I just wonder if Neil still feels “You’ve gotta go in after it, and never be denied,” now that it’s no longer en vogue to be calling for war.

I can’t speak for Neil Young, but given the same set of circumstances, I would still favor retaliating against al-Qaeda by attacking its base of operations and the government that housed it.

Unfortunately, *no* country was directly responsible for 9/11. Afghanistan was *more* directly to blame than any other nation, but we weren’t really attacked by its government, either. (Even the Taliban wasn’t *that* stupid.)

The nation second-most directly responsible was probably Saudi Arabia, whose royal family accommodates the Wahabist schools that train little Muslim boys in medieval superstition and jihad under the pretext of teaching religion and send them off to join organizations like bin Laden’s. Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi nationals. That’s not a coincidence. (Incidentally, *none* of the other four was Iraqi.)

  16. Lien Says:

A.L. Baroza:”Funny that the right wingers now control all of the branches of government and most of the corporate world and media but they’re still so fucking angry.”

If you’re referring to me you’re making assumptions you’re not qualified to make. Any anger you read in my comments comes from inside you, not me.
I’m certainly not a “right winger”, either. If anything, I fell sadness for people like you who get their political opinions from musicians and comic book writers.

  17. Lien Says:

Steve:”No name-calling, no flaming in the Comments section.

Anyone who cannot abide by that simple principle of civility will immediately be barred from posting without notice or negotiation.”

Steve, I’ve been following your blog. You’re the last person here who should be lecturing on the merits of civility. Wasn’t it you who recently called Bush defenders “lobotomized, eyes-gouged-out partisan[s]”?

  18. Brian Spence Says:

Lien, it’s HIS BLOG. If you hate it, leave.

I don’t think anyone here gets their political opinions from comics or music, but it’s nice to hear or read an impassioned expression of those opinions. Much like how many right wingers feel about country music or Limbaugh and O’Reilly.

Also, how can you call people “idiots” and “fools” and not realize that comes across as anger?

  19. gordon Says:

“Not cowed? Like you are by all the idiots who think we shouldn’t be at war?

    MG, you people are fools!”

I guess a lot more or us are becoming fools, and the list is growing longer by the day as the truth seeps out through the cracks in Bush’s faulty armor. A lot of people only believe in polls when the polls already agree with their personal opinion. Are all the people who’ve lost confidence in Bush wrong? What were they when they believed in him?

  20. Allen Montgomery Says:

Lien: “I fell sadness for people like you who get their political opinions from musicians and comic book writers.”

Are you saying that musicians and comic book writers are somehow inherently less informed than anyone else?

I’ve heard other people say things like they weren’t going to see any more Clint Eastwood movies because Clint said something against BushJr. and/or the Iraq war. Are some public figures less entitled to an opinion simply because they actually earn ther money, rather than getting it from Jack Abramoff?

Makes me wish John Wayne was still alive.

  21. Steve Gerber Says:

Lien: “Wasn’t it you who recently called Bush defenders ‘lobotomized, eyes-gouged-out partisan[s]’?”

Yup. Which is why you’re allowed to call *me* an idiot. I started it.

Here. I’ll do it for you: “I’m an idiot.” Better?

But you’re not allowed to call anybody *else* that, or anything like it, on this blog. (And you wouldn’t anywhere else, if you’ve got any manners, but that’s not my concern.)

Thanks for posing the question civilly, though.

  22. gordon Says:

knowing you just a bit, Steve, I’m sure you’re not an idiot.

At least I hope you aren’t, cause, if you are, I’m afraid of what it makes me!

  23. Charles Bryan Says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought that in a democracy citizens were not only allowed to question the actions of those in power, but that citizens were actually expected to do so.

    Crazy me.

  24. gordon Says:

Yep, Charles. Crazy you — except you know Steve’s rules — only HE can call you crazy!!!!

  25. Jim Brocius Says:

No government should be trustd by it’s citizens. All governments should be kept on short leashes by thier citizens.
What is said is more important than who says it.

  26. Tom Walker Says:

On an unrelated matter, I’ve been musing today that jesus christ probably looked more like a middle eastern terrorist than a bible belter..

no doubt his “terrorist training camp” would have been swiftly bombed by some ally or other – faster than crucifiction..

  27. Brian Spence Says:

Gordon, you’re missing the point completely.

  28. gordon Says:

    Brian….

Um… Steve knows exactly what I meant. Trust me.

  29. Man of Aluminum Says:

“On an unrelated matter, I’ve been musing today that jesus christ probably looked more like a middle eastern terrorist than a bible belter..

no doubt his “terrorist training camp” would have been swiftly bombed by some ally or other – faster than crucifiction..”

Um, Tom… what the fuck? You do realize that none of this is based on how the terrorists look, right? It doesn’t matter what they look like… what matters is what they are doing.
